As a stand alone book it is difficult to actually provide a synopsis of what the story even is. In Asimov's style the story is mostly told through dialogue, which is interesting but somewhat hard to follow. I like the ideas of control through religion and trade. I somewhat am familiar with the plot of the books to come (which are much more interesting I'm told), therefore it was easier to invest in this book. However, I don't think I would have liked it as much without prior knowledge of the story to come.

In terms of “speculative fiction”, the “fiction” part is definitely an afterthought. While it’s certainly prophetic in some aspects, and obviously paved the way for 50 years’ worth of excellent sci-fi, there simply wasn’t enough story within ‘Foundation’ to latch onto.

By the end the approach to storytelling got a bit tedious: 2 men talking and one secretly has the upper hand.

Still, I'm glad I read it. Some of the intrigue was interesting, particularly in the early stories.

An interesting take on centuries (millennia!) of galactic geopolitics and technology. I enjoyed the story, but struggled with some aspects of the book that did not age well. You can count on one hand the number of named women in the book, and none play any significant role. Reading more about the author and his views did not help this issue.
