Jamie grabs my hand, and I know what he’s about to say before he says it. Because I’ve felt this way a thousand times before. The racing heart, the wild eyes. Adrenaline surging through my veins. Only this time, I’m not bolting alone. Jamie is right here with me, gripping my hand in his like he never wants to let go.
“Run.”
This book was a delight! I really love Hannah Brown’s writing style. It’s so endearing and perfectly captures the romantic comedy genre without feeling cringey. The Four Engagement Rings of Sybil Rain follows FMC Sybil. As we can gather from the title and know from Mistakes We Never Made, Sybil has a hard time with her love life. The last story left off with her getting left at the alter and this story picks up 1 year later. Her honeymoon vouchers are expiring and her friends convince her to use them for a solo trip so they don’t go to waste. But WHO ELSE would she run into at the resort, other than her ex-fiance Jamie?
I picked this up and it captured my attention from the very first lines. I LOVED Sybil’s wild and spontaneous spirit. When I started this, I thought the story was taking a different direction, but I’m really satisfied with the direction it did take. I loved all the characters and think they all served their purpose in the story perfectly. I really liked the character growth and getting to see exactly why Sybil behaved in the manner she did (we got to figure that out along side her). A bit like goldilocks- her past relationships were very extreme, until she was able to find her perfect balance. I really enjoyed seeing her and her partner pull the best parts out of one another.
Flew through this one and am definitely adding Hannah Brown to my auto-buy/read list.

“But some things have only grown more apparent, like the way [he] always seems to take care of me- in both the big ways, like following me into the ocean, and the quieter ones, like making me breakfast.”

I think we all could be a little more self reflective like Sybil and learn to stop running away from every hard thing

Just because she's self-aware of her terrible decision-making doesn't mean I enjoy reading about this.
I feel entirely delusional about how much I liked Mistakes We Never Made because I loved that book and this one was such a struggle. When I found out that this book focused on Sybil, I was so excited! And then I realized that I don't really like Sybil. I think she's a better side character than a main character.
The premise of this book is that Sybil runs into all of her past relationships that resulted in an engagement, which I assume would end in hijinks galore (and they do). But I was sorely disappointed when Seb takes until the halfway point of the book to make his appearance, after we have a 75% resolution between Jamie and Sybil on their breakup (save for the inevitable sex scene and the actual getting back together). The author spent the equivalent of an entire rom-com movie with the first half of this book, complete with the main relationship avoiding, encountering, and then choosing to be together, and then tosses in the rest of the plot like an afterthought. Why should I give a shit about Seb when I'm rooting for Jamie and I know that he still likes her too?
Spoilers for the end,but I legitimately thought her "fourth engagement" was going to be her choosing herself with that moonstone ring. I had no delusions that she wouldn't get back together with Jamie, but I was not expecting a last-minute engagement on that basis (also the reality of flying from Maui to LA and back again in a matter of hours - the love of my life would understand that I would simply not do that). Maybe that was just my brain inventing a different ending, but that mistaken assumption made the actual ending fall extremely flat to me.

Spoilers for the end,
This book was just plain fun and easy to read. I liked the structure going through the FMC’s past engagements and slowly uncovering the many issues that caused her to call off the most recent one. There was lots of chemistry, a bit of whimsy, and a lot more emotion than I expected. For a former reality tv star turned author, Hannah Brown is doing an unreasonably good job of writing really enjoyable and quality books.

One thing that is missing is a trigger warning regarding discussion of miscarriage and abuse. If that is a sensitive topic for you, I recommend reading with caution.
I thought this was a fun story and an easy summer read. There were aspects of Sybil's journey (e.g., Vegas and Dallas) that were mentioned briefly and then glossed over. I think the reader may have benefitted from more details. Sebastian entering feels kinda delayed and not executed well.
Overall, there was good representation of depression, anxiety, PCOS, and miscarriage. I did not read Hannah's first book and did not realize the characters were interconnected from the first story. I do not think you need to have read book 1 to read this. This was a cute romcom and a good second chance romance.

This is a follow-up to the Mistakes We Never Made series, which trades heavy steam for emotional depth. It also delivered on charm and heartache. It was delightful to see familiar faces from the first book, but Sybil’s story stands on its own in a great way. I started so frustrated with her tendency to lie and run, but it quickly turned into deep empathy as her history unfolded. The blend of relatable emotions with a splash of escapist wealth made it feel grounded and like a romantic fantasy. It’s an easy read with surprising weight, where several moments brought me to tears. It was a great second book in the series, and I’m hoping for more!
