"The Intoxicated" is an intriguing short. I like the eerie atmosphere that really settles in as the male narrator listens to Eileen's possibly accurate depiction of a desolate future. I can tell at times he wants to refute her but I think multiple things hold him back.
- He's like wasted dude. His sober enough to follow along with what she's saying but it's more like he understand the vibes of her words of a morbid future
- He's from an older generation and says stuff like kids these days yadada I don't think he wants to seem like he's too 'uncool' to 'get' the dreary future AND/OR he thinks it lesser/non-polite to disagree with whom he says is a child
Moderate: Alcohol
A very nice build up, but the ending didn't pay off

It feels like there could have been more to the story, though it was meant to be short. It was so simple, maybe a little too simple.
Great short story, contrasts many opposites: old-young, intoxicated-sober, cynic-optimist, man-woman, outside (party) - kitchen table (inside), experience-innocence; and in aggregate; yes indeed; human, all too human. Loved it.
shirley jackson's short stories - 1/25

i feel like i got dropped in the middle of an indie movie, and then got taken out of it again in the middle of the scene i'm watching.
17 year old pretentious kid vs adult man, who doesn't know how to deal with the kids nowadays. honestly - can't blame him. sounds like that aforementioned kid tries to be very different than the mass of other kids in her timeline, but neither the adult in the story nor i really buy that.
i heard shirley jackson is a really good short story writer, and while i don't understand the point of this story really, i will give miss jackson the benefit of the doubt and assume that the mass opinion is right, and it is actually good.
