Jean Rhys writes with an immediacy and light touch that is infectious, despite the inevitably affectatious nature of an English writer.

The colonial experience is explored (from the viewpoint of a young girl of Western parents) and also the plight of an aging twentysomething woman with little prospects in a class-obsessed, mannish world...
