Soft DNF. Didn’t really have motivation to continue reading other than the fact that I bought the next two books lol

I thought of going for 2 stars - but honestly, I hate how high this book is rated, and I want to be petty. How can a book about Jack the Ripper be this mind-numbing? Because, its not about him at all!
This is a debut, so the star is just for the fact. The book lacked a plot, any characterization, factual checks or a basic likeable romance.
Let's talk about authors who intend to portray feminist heroines by putting down or dissolving any other female characters into a mud puddle - our dear Audrey Rose is the best example of such a portrayal, stamping her snowflake dainty privileged feet and being rescued by men in every turn. The "I was thankful I wasn't the the kind of girl to lose my mind over a handsome face." kind who waxed about pretty faces of all men in the book. She stumbled across all her clues, and did not display her overtly emphasized upon intellect on a single page.
Let's talk about cheap knockoffs of tropey YA male leads and how we are supposed to just know how magnificently intelligent they are without an ounce of proof in almost 400 pages. Thomas Cresswell has not one redeeming factor. Even his snobbery was stale.
How they both "fell" for each other is more mysterious than the serial killer they hunted, who we shall not call Jack the Ripper, because that makes me feel like I lost some IQ.
I am Indian, and eating nan and wearing saris does not make you someone who respects their Indian heritage, when said country was being colonized by England. Ugh, why did Audrey Rose have to part Indian?!
I cannot believe this series has 3 more major works.

- Protagonistin war Klug wie 1,5 Meter Feldweg im dichten Nebel
- MMC ist ein wanne be Sherlock. Nur mit weniger Charme
- Eindeutige Sherlock Holmes Anspielungen waren super plump

Even though this book wasn't perfect and there were a few minor things that were left unexplained I loved it despite all that.

I spent the last half of this book with my heart in my throat. Shit got real, fast.

So absolutely boring. I skipped 200 pages and I still didn't miss anything at the end. I knew exactly what was going on and wasn't confused at all. I didn't expect the plot twist, but I honestly didn't care anyway.

This was a really fun read. 4 stars. I appreciated the historical notes she included in the back, explaining the truths we know about the Ripper and where she took liberties. It's definitely a YA novel, though it doesn't shy away from the gore, so the plot and mystery are pretty straight forward, but it was still enjoyable, especially if you like Victorian era London as a setting.
