Stephanie is wildly talented. This is a beautifully vulnerable piece, and is rich and simple. Gorgeous.

"Bangs wrote when the singer hurts him
we do too. I don't know, Madame George seems
incredibly hot to me. in charge of the room.
it makes more sense when she says
be cool be cool I think that it's the cops
not lord have mercy in Astral Weeks
she's helpless, acted upon. another reason
The Sweet Inspirations version, ok
I just want to keep saying that
until it's a thing, is vastly superior"

Truly LOVE the takedown of Greil Marcus by poetry - something I was not expecting to read in any poetry collection. As much as Van Morrison as a human makes me NAH, goddammit, Madame George! Thank you, Stephanie Young. And to all you know-it-all men out there - take a hike. Read some poetry.

reflective medium-paced

Pretty ace book of two “warm up” poems and then the big number. I felt like it was easy to follow, and I actually found the length of Pet Sounds as a poem made it easier to sink into almost like a meditation. Good little read.

"Where in the United States can you live off the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour?" The writing style was not my cup of tea.

oh my god. this book rechanged how i think about poetry. the only thing i had against it was that it gave me a strange feeling. you know when your friend talks to you about their problems and you know everything about their life but they know nothing about yours? i feel like i know the author so intimately now--i understand every inner working of her mind. it's so impressive that a short poetry book could do that, and i feel so grateful to be able to have experienced that.

Really loved the first poem “Congenital” (and bought the collection on its strength). Unfortunately the rest was not my cup of tea.
