First and foremost, I read this book for English in school, so it isn’t quite surprising that it was a) not a genre I am likely to ever read again, b) a book I wanted to read at all (really), and c) not a favorite. But what is surprising is that I even liked it as much as I did. This story is discreetly sardonic and a muted red when painting the picture of Iran in the late 20th century. It shows Marjane’s life in vignettes of events, spanning decades, and I think it suffered from that. While I appreciate her understated, blunt narration to show the innocence with which she perceived the horrors of this war-torn nation, I think the scale of her book stopped her from doing the story justice, allowing us to connect with her story. 3.5!
