Considering the fact that this is a novelization of an old 90s text based game based off a throwaway joke found within one of the Hitchhiker’s Guide novels, I was actually pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable this story was!

The pacing is what really saves this book, as the plot constantly progresses and there’s never any real downtime. In fact, I’d say the plot here is arguably better (or at least more consistent) than the plot in a lot of the Hitchhiker books. The jokes tend to land a lot as well, and the characters were fun too (I especially loved my man the bomb).

Overall, this book is definitely an acquired taste. If you’re a Hitchhiker’s super fan, then you’d prob really enjoy this book. If not, I thought it was still worth the read!

About what I'd expect from a Monty Python player writing HHGttG fan-fiction. I was hoping for a bit more. There are individual segments that are quite entertaining, but, taken as a whole, I was supremely underwhelmed. I paid $1.99 for this, and I feel like that was one dollar too much. I had about 99 cents of fun with it.

I think my biggest issue with this book is that I never really cared what happened to any of the characters. All of them except Dan were so ludicrously over the top that I couldn't take them seriously. Dan was just boring (and probably intended to fill the Arthur Dent role). I cared enough to think the rearranged relationships by the end of the book were a good thing for all involved, but that's about it.

Side note: if this were aimed at, oh, 10-12 year-olds, it might work better. However, there's enough on-screen sex (however vaguely and supposedly humorously described) that it's clearly not aimed at that age group.

So, overall? If you liked HHGttG and can find this for cheap, you might find it mildly entertaining.

My favourite game is a book! I much prefer the game but this little jaunt into an alien world was a lovely reflection of a world created by Douglas Adams.

I'll be honest, this book is nowhere near as humorous as the computer game. What? You didn't know the game existed? I highly recommend you go and find yourself a copy, get an emulator (the game is old, but not too old) and sit down for some awesome fun. The book only captures a small sliver of the game, and sadly, perhaps because I have played the game too many times, the book just doesn't catch me like the game does. Yes, it is slightly different from the game, and yes, it was written by Terry Jones (of Monty Python) while Douglas Adams was busy writing the game script, but you'd think with that great pedigree it would turn out to have more humor, not less... ah well, I still have it to round out my collection of books by Douglas Adams, and it is worth reading at least once.

It was interesting reading this book: a novelization by Terry Jones (of Monty Python fame) of a video game that was written by Douglas Adams (of Hitchhikers Guide Fame). I have a feeling like it wasn't as good if it was written solely by one man, but this half and half job didn't turn out so well. The treatment of women in this book also REALLY didn't age well. Hard yikes.
