3.5 stars rounded up. Sometimes the writing and pacing was lacking for me, but I like the idea and characters. Excited to keep going
[returning now that I've finished everything that's released in this series]
This series is probably a holy grail for me. I've really enjoyed the main characters, the families, the politics, the magic, and the world-building. This book is the lowest rated for me personally because the world-building is a lot to get through, but if you persevere, I think it's worth it. I will definitely be re-reading this series when the newest book comes out (which is very high praise for me, because I literally NEVER re-read series)
Does Lyr make the smartest decisions? Pssh, no. And she will continue to make that mistake throughout the series, so if that's something that's going to bother you, then maybe you won't like this series, ha.
BUT, I honestly think she makes decisions like a human. She's 19, for crying out loud. She's impulsive and makes rash decisions based on saving the people she loves, and while I wanted to smack her across the face sometimes for her 19-year-old noble-turned-soturion poor decision-making skills, I can't really fault her.
This series is fun. There are a lot of twists and turns. Some are predictable, some aren't, but I feel like they all have made sense to me. Looking back, it really feels like everything in this series has been thought of since the beginning. Every plot point, every twist, every betrayal, every relationship has furthered the plot to where it is today, and so far, I have not found myself saying "well wtf was the point of this then?"
Now I have to save up money to buy the entire series in hardback *sigh*

I kept waiting for everything to make more sense than it did which is disappointing because I feel like this has potential. There were too many terms and characters at the beginning, and I still barely caught them all by the end. I’m so confused about the ending - that’s it? That’s the whole plot of this book? It finally started getting better like halfway, and I’m continuing the series in hopes it gets better.
