I went into this book without any expectations, but Nathan Harris delivered a solid debut. Definitely a solemn book, The Sweetness of Water portrays a white Southern family who welcomes home their son, a veteran of the war, while also welcoming two freed Black men, who are also brothers, to work on their farm. The novel goes on to show their worlds and how the war, their town, and slavery has affected each of them personally. Through grief and trauma, each character struggles differently and ultimately finds their own way to cope. This is a beautiful book capturing a piece of time we don’t often, but should, talk about. The transition from slavery to freedom was and is a long and arduous one, and this novel does a great job giving readers a glimpse into its very beginning.

Absolutely incredible writing, story, characters, everything. Grew deeply attached to the characters. Had to take breaks at some intense plot points.

I listened to the audiobook.  Some of the accents were over the top to the point that they took me out of the story.
