It’s poorly written. Reads like poorly edited fanfic at parts and is extremely self indulgent. The book is designed to make the readers soul turn black and strained. The events that happen in the book are extremely traumatic so yeah. It WILL get you down but in a very clumsy way (This book could have used a better edit, and some tough love maybe it would have been alright). Darkness is a part of life. This book feels like a slap in the face to survivors. If you want to read good works of art that break your heart try Kim Thúy instead.

Sobbed so hard during the final ten minutes I was out of breath. I'm still crying a little. jesus fucking christ. Such a hard piece to get through. Full of sorrow and frustration and suffering. But also love. So deep and unapologetic and true. Always accompanied by grief and fear. I'm gonna be sick.

This book is not for everyone - very important to check all trigger/content warnings before reading. I know the book is controversial (and for good reason) but I really loved the writing and the character profiles that the author created in such a way they felt like real people, like friends I actually knew. I also loved how Time was conveyed throughout the novel as well - without specific dates or years but through occasions and references to those in flashbacks. It is a difficult book, with a lot of confronting topics (even beyond the expected) but worthwhile.

It took me so long to read this because of its reputation of being devastatingly sad and yuuUuup it was definitely that. but it was also really beautiful

Earth shatteringly heartbreaking. One of the best books I've ever read, and that I will never forget.

The most heartbreaking book I have ever read, phenomenal writing, fantastic characters, not a word wasted in this book! Absolutely life-changing book, will probably never read anything like it again! 100/10 would not recommend! Seriously! It's one of the best if not the best book I've ever read but it took a part of my soul away! Never cried so much while reading before! Pls check triggers!

Honestly I don’t really recommend this to anyone because it was purely a disturbing amalgamation of anything sick and twisted the author could think of:
Plot - non-existent
Insufferable characters - yes
Demonisation of minorities - yes
Any horrible thing a child/person shouldn’t experience was just crammed into a singular one-dimensional character and at the end of this book (if you even make it that far) you are left with a sense of horror and left with the burning question of ‘what the actual fuck did I just read?’

Content/trigger warnings:
-Basically anything that you could possibly think of
