There are so many characters in this book that it's hard to keep track. The newer version have a family tree to help guide the way, but mine didn't. However, I managed. Everyone in this book was either very promiscuous, sleeping with their relative, or a drunk. Except for Marie, who happened to be my favorite character.

Love Medicine is a beautiful story of family ties and resilience in the face of a changing world. It details the intricacies of life in and around a Native American reservation, mostly in North Dakota. The two main families, the Nanapushes and Kapshaws are linked by a philandering father who ends up tying their fates together. The short stories build into something resembling a novel, but it's the evocative writing that really leads the way here, highlighting how family and blood ties persist through years of struggle. That makes it sound pretty depressing, and the themes are, but the writing is so good that there is space for beauty too.

Louise Erdrich is the queen of writing complex family relationships and rich, layered storylines.

Beautiful. No notes. I love linked short stories, and nobody does it better than Erdrich. Compelling stories written with such precision, every sentence is a treat.
