I found this hard to believe but this was my first Nora Roberts read- I know right?! I have seen her books forever but after seeing that this was one of Catherine Cowles favorite books (who I LOVE) I decided to jump in. I think I went in with the wrong mindset. I was thinking this would be a romantic suspense book with some heat when really it is a suspense/thriller with a side of romance lacking heat. There was definitely more of a focus on the FMC's arc and her overcoming great challenges that have been thrown her way and how she has not only grown from that but strived.
Morgan is working towards her goal of saving for her next dream, her own bar. She lives with her roommate Nina and all is well with the world until she meets Luke who literally tears it to pieces. She comes home to find her roommate Nina dead in her place and all of her savings stolen by none other than Luke who is actual a serial killer/stealer. Morgan is devastated and has no choice but to go home to her mom and grandma and figure out what is next. Her girls as she calls them have a nice setup and offer her a job at their place but Morgan wants something of her own. She ends up getting a job at the Jameson Inn as the bar manager. She knocks the socks off the manager and continues to impress which is how she catches Miles's eye. He is the oldest son of the Jameson family and is the COO. It was interesting to see their relationship because it didn't seem like either of them were wowed when they first meet- but you learn later on that they were both trying to play it cool.
Morgan thinks everything is going to change once again when she learns from the FBI that Luke is still after her. He is now taunting her and she feels the need to tell her boss and their family what is happening so that everyone can be prepared. Of course they don't fire her but instead take her into the fold as one of their own. Her and Miles take a leap and decide to see where what they are feeling will go. Everything comes to a head when Luke shows back up in town and Morgan's worst fears are realized BUT alls well that ends well.
I think the reason I gave this three stars was Miles and Morgan were a little off to me. We got POVs from both of them, and I felt like everything was very nonchalant. I wanted passion and steamy but got a slow burn with fade to black scenes. I also did not enjoy reading the killer's chapters. I appreciated trying to get into his head, but also felt like it was a little overkill.
I think I will try Nora again though- any recommendations??

This book is quite fast-paced and to the point, set up really nicely for a shock beginning in the first few chapters turning the MC's life upside-down.
I enjoyed the journey, it made it a book I wanted to pick up and read.
I will say the romance didn't really hit for me, there was no spark or anything to make me root for them as 'meant to be' and I only got the inkling of the connection in the one final chapter when she was in danger. That aside, I liked the build-up of suspense as we followed the antagonist between the protagonist's life glimpses, very much made for a heart-pumping finale.
