I really want to like this book/series, but man. It feels like all world building and no plot. Don't get me wrong, tons of stuff happens, but you are stuck hanging out with the person that literally never does anything ever. I think the world is pretty well fleshed out, at least around the university (that barely holds classes it seems). Well maybe not the world, but the politics are?
And look, there is a big reveal at the end of this book that was pretty obvious since the first chapter of the FIRST book, so up until the end of this book, you are just waiting for the MC to have the ability to do anything! That's like 1000 pages of wringing your hands while everyone else shows they are capable. She barely even tries to lean into learning other skills, like they are supposed to be at witch university and they never go to class? After like 65% of the book the characters were off in some forest and then went "well we better get back to go study" - like what? Oh right, truly feel like we forgot that school was supposed to be happening at a certain point. A teacher even points out to her that her lack of magic doesn't need to cripple her, she can learn other skills that may help, and what happens is we don't even see her learn these skills. She helps her friend over their chemistry set for one plot point that is OFF SCREEN. AGAIN. Because she's ASLEEP. So she didn't even learn the skill, and we don't even watch the event HAPPENNNNNN.
Finally at the end of this book, the MC is revealed to have the capability to maybe do something, but will she? Is it worth ANOTHER 20 hour audio book/ 661 pages to watch plans get made, and then sit around while the execution happens, waiting to find out the outcome? I'll bet that the next book will be like the hunger games where they allow Katniss to act like she is participating, but actually isn't. Anything to make sure we, the reader, are completely outside of any actual action happening.
This took me a year to finish - many many many library holds. I am not really keen to go place a hold for the next one, so I honestly don't think there is going to be a point in my future where I want to pick up the next one, once i've forgotten all of the things that barely happened in this one.

At times it did feel like the story was a little bit too long but I did still enjoy it. The ending definitely has definitely made me want to pick up the third book soon as I need to know what happens next.
I do have to say that Elloren did get on my nerves quite a bit in this book but lets hope she grows into a strong person in the third book. I feel like the side characters definitely made this book super enjoyable for me.

So much better that the first book! The first one, for a good first half, was almost juvenile in it's writing and content, and I almost gave up just as it started getting better.
This one was captivating from the first page and I gobbled it up in just one day. It's a lot more mature, both in character development and larger context of the world building. Really loved this one and look forward to the next.
