The strange thing about ‘The Story of a a Shipwrecked Sailor’ is that it’s not about a shipwrecked sailor but one who was washed off his ship with eight other people. Those people died pretty instantly but Luis Alejandro Velasco was stuck on a raft for nine days. What follows is a gruelling few days without food, drink and a great deal of sunburn. He kills a baby seagull but feels guilty, kills a fish, gets two bites from it before losing it to a shark and then is beset by hallucinations.
This is a short book, assembled from interviews Marquez gave Velasco and adopting a very simple, unpoetic, stripped back style. It works well with the subject matter, a man holds onto his life through sheer tenacity, not really in any position to philosophise. A prettier book could easily be possible with this material but it wouldn’t have the same immediacy.
I did wonder why he kept being worried about burning his lungs, I wondered if that was a translation issue.
All in all, an interesting and gripping little book about the importance of hope and the tenacity of life.

That's the true story of a vigorous young sailor who fell from a Colombian navy destroyer in the 1950s in the Caribbean Sea. The literary talent of Garcia-Marquez makes us live ten days of this castaway who will survive his distress. We are a little in the world of Poe, but the story is true there.

quick read, very compelling nonfiction. From the point of view of the person who lived the story, written by one of the best writers ever.
