It's a literary account of the true story of Luis Alejandro Velasco, a Colombian sailor who fell overboard and survived for ten days in a meager life raft floating on the Caribbean Sea. The narrative here is straightforward and harrowing, a first person account of survival from a psyche devolving toward the simplicity of animal instinct as thirst and starvation abrade its personality and humanity. What stands out is the difference in García Márquez’s spare style when he writes in reporter-journalist mode as in this piece versus his dreamily rich flow in other works like One Hundred Years of Solitude. The ability to match manner to modality further marks his talent as worthy of its fame.

Expected something different - something more akin to Jon Krakeur's narrative style in "Into the Wild". Good, short read however, but written in a constricted journalistic style. The premise started off promising, but I could feel that something was missing. The narration felt flat, somehow. Don't think I'll pick this up again.
