More unsettling than frightening, Burnt Offerings shows a slow descent into madness, lost to the supernatural power of a house. The characters are believable but unlikeable, and the relationship between Marian and Ben is toxic from the start. There’s a scene of marital rape, though it isn’t violent. The narrator switches between perspectives, always a limited third person, but he really seems more sympathetic to Ben than I think justified. Aunt Elizabeth is the most likable of them all.
