As I continue deeper into the Belador series with Alterant, I’m even more pulled into Evalle’s world—and more frustrated with the politics and power plays of the Tribunal, especially Sen. Honestly, I can’t stand him. The Tribunal feels less like a ruling body meant to maintain order and more like a group of bored tyrants playing with people's lives for their own amusement. It’s maddening to see them act so carelessly with real lives hanging in the balance. For a brief moment, I actually wondered if this Sen could be the same as Sin from the Dark-Hunter world—until I remembered that Sin, despite his power, has kindness and empathy. This Sen? Yuck. The complete opposite. Manipulative, arrogant, and infuriating.

Evalle continues to be the heart of this story. The fight to liberate the Alterants is taking a huge toll on her—physically, emotionally, and even spiritually—but she still steps up, even when she’s pushed to the edge. She’s not just surviving; she’s choosing to fight for others, even when no one is fighting for her. That kind of strength is rare and deeply admirable.

I also absolutely love her relationship with Storm. There’s such a raw, magnetic connection between them—grounded in trust, even when the world around them is chaos. And then there’s the other guy—ugh, his name escapes me—but I know exactly where Evalle stands with him. Their dynamic is tense, and it’s clear that it could go one of two ways. The moment he discovers that Evalle is an Alterant, I’m bracing myself. I get the feeling his first instinct will be betrayal and rage, that classic “How dare you trick me” moment. But there’s also hope—hope that he’ll see Evalle for who she really is, and recognize that not all Alterants are the same. That not all monsters wear the labels they’re given.

I’m really enjoying how the story is coming together. The world is layered with danger, secrets, and a constant push-pull between control and freedom. Evalle is caught right in the middle, and the stakes just keep getting higher. With each book, I feel more invested in her journey—and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds.
adventurous funny mysterious fast-paced

The fate of the Beladors rests solely on Evalle and her ability to bring in some rogue Alterants…a rare breed with superhuman powers and the urge to turn into a raging beasts. Evalle is set on proving that she and the rest of her race can train to be productive members of their society, that they aren’t mindless killing machines. Problem is, bodies are showing up and making her case hard to plead. Could the Alterants be behind it or is there a shadowy group making it look like they are behind the killings? Evalle needs to find out, to save her life and theirs. Only hitch is, Tristan, the only person that can help her….could care less and has his own agenda.

I did not like this one much at all. I should start by saying I didn’t read the first book, Blood Trinity, and so even after reading the first 100ish pages of this one I was completely lost. Not only was there virtually no recap given but the world building was entirely too complex for me. I had no clue what was going on. I am of the opinion that any book that gives me a pronunciation guide is way to over the top for me. Give me words and names I can actually say so that the whole focus of the book isn’t “Did I say that right? How do I say that again? Whaaaaa?” When I have to keep thinking about how to say things, the true essence and story lose all interest for me.

I also had issues with there not being an ending. I was left up in the air and everything felt unresolved. I completely understand that this is a series but not only was there zero resolution in the plot, but also with the characters. I liked Evalle and thought on her own she was kick ass. She had been dealt a hard blow with her life, not only being something she didn’t understand but also being confined to a cage for long periods of time…attacked and raped as well. Obviously she had a hard exterior that only sheltered a broken interior. I liked Storm as well and thought his ability to squeeze past her defenses was nothing short of a miracle. I wished there would have been some sort of ending with the two of them at least together. I don’t really care for story ARCS for characters over multiple books…I want something to be definite by the end. Even if the protagonist lives to fight another day. If I were to compare I think I would have to compare Storm’s involvement in the whole thing kind of like Karen Marie Monings fever series. Where the male lead only shows occasionally. Storm is running his own show and his own agenda…it just happens to coincide with Evalles and he finds that completely ok because he is harboring some serious lust for the girl. Not to mention his serious lack of explaining anything to her past what she has to know in that moment.

I did like Tristan and his duplicitous ways. I thought he was incredibly hot and I chuckled every time he tried to get under Storms skin. I found his banter to be the highlight of the book. I also found myself rooting for him and if everyone elses story is carrying over, I sure hope this guy finds a bit of happiness. I have a feeling he is misunderstood a lot….although I also have a feeling he is a jackass at times just for his own kicks and giggles. :)

So coupled with the fact I had no idea what the hell was going on, I didn’t like all the misc characters either. There are way too many players in this game. I couldn’t keep track of them all. Every last one of them with a name that seemed to be spelled one way and said a completely different way. Everyone had their own agenda and I’m pretty sure most were not what they seemed. Which, again, is fine for some…..just not for me. I don’t need to know what is gong on in every single characters mind…I like it to be broke up into different books and then perhaps at the ending of a series, blend it all together.

I did make it all the way through this one, so it is not labeled a DNF. For the majority of the time I wore the classic look of puzzlement and a “what the…?” face.

I give Alterant by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love 2 stars!

Alterant is the second book in Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love's combined efforts series Belador.

Ok, I'll come clean, I LOVED this book. I loved the first book. There was something about Tzader and Quinn and even Storm that just exudes sex appeal and raw manness right out of the book. I just was intrigued by them, captivated and couldn't put the books down. While I was waiting for this book to arrive, after reading the first, I read some more of Sherrilyn Kenyon's books, and how she makes the draw, the appeal and the grab of the male characters come across in writing is beyond me. I am not talking sex scenes, but just in the protection of a lady, the kindness, the way they talk and act. It is just amazing!

So back to the story, this book picks up right at the end of book one, Blood Trinity. Yes, book one ended in a cliff hanger, and normally I hate those, it just makes me so made, but in this one all I wanted was to get the next book and read it. This one again just kinda ends in the middle of the story, I mean some things are resolved but new things are opened and just as those are about to begin, the book ends. It has me clawing at the computer to get the next book!

Evalle is slowing learning that not all men are to be rejected. That the hurts of one man does not apply to the whole of mankind. Although being an Alterant puts her in a class below others, she still fights for truth and justice. And she just may have found that someone knows more about the Alterants and where they came from. It just might help her to understand, but as always, there is a catch. Can she trust someone who has betrayed her in the past.

Evalle isn't the only one to have their lives and futures played with. The Goddess Mecha is playing in a number of lives, including that of Tzader and Brinna. To be honest, there were times when I wanted to smack Mecha and tell her to butt out, but she is the Goddess so I guess she can do whatever she wants, but I find her a little hard to like after this book. It's just a little sary the way she thinks people should give up true happiness to do her bidding.

This book had a pronunciation key at the end of the book, which I loved!! Wished it had been in the first book, but I found that I was pronouncing things correct. The "evil" druids that are trying to take over are called the Medb, which if you know Gaelic is pronounced Maeve. That happens to be my daughter's name, so I had to tell her about her role in the book. As a family we always find it neat to see names we know in a book, and since my kids all have very traditional old Irish names, I never see them in a book. Sherrilyn Kenyon has changed that. She has included my daughter in this book, and in the League series, my son Tiernan is one of the characters! Wow! Now how often do you see that?!

This is a great book, a great series and even more a great author. I am looking forward to reading more of this series and more by this author.

A solid meh

Second in the Belador urban fantasy series set in a contemporary Atlanta, Georgia and revolving around an Alterant-Belador, Evalle Kincaid.

My Take

It's a complex cast of characters and took a bit before I started to remember events from Blood Trinity. And I remembered that I had been fascinated. Now I'm bummed that Alterant is a 2011 publication as it means I have to wait for #3!!!

Kenyon and Love are blending old ideas of gods, goddesses, and Native American beliefs with a whole new series of cultures of Alterants, Beladors, and witches. The series incorporates a ruling court with the autocratic approach of the gods and uses our prejudice of the unknown to create a spellbinding story even as they solicit our compassion for Evalle—Feenix cracks me up. I just don't want him cooking my pizzas!

Amazingly enough, I haven't any quibbles unless you count wanting to know more than what Kenyon or Love have told us so far.

The Story

Evalle has been summoned to the Tribunal to defend herself against charges of colluding with Tristan, an Alterant, and to provide proof that humans are at no risk from her. A proof she doesn't have seeing as she's been kinda busy saving the world. Of course, that won't cut it with the Tribunal. They tend to favor a scorched earth policy.

There's another little wrinkle that will affect Evalle's defense—Alterants are appearing all over the country and killing humans. But to Evalle's shock and delight, Brina steps up and defends her, pledging her own life that Evalle will be successful in this next task the Tribunal sets for her. A task that sets her up for failure because Evalle must gain Tristan's cooperation. A man, an Alterant, whom she put back into prison and who believes she will kill all other Alterants. A policy diametrically opposed to what he plans. And he has hidden the three Alterants she must locate and produce for the Tribunal.

The Characters

Evalle Kincaid is a half-breed—Belador and Alterant. It's the Alterant half that makes everyone want to kill her as everyone believes they are unstoppable monsters. To stay alive, Evalle has sworn to uphold the code of the Beladors and to work for VIPER, a policing organization protecting humans from the non-humans. Vladimir Quinn and Tzader are also with VIPER as well as being her best friends. Feenix is a two-foot tall gargoyle and her friend and pet.

Native American Storm is a tracker and shapeshifts into a jaguar. He has recently arrived in Atlanta and is working temporarily with VIPER and with Evalle as her partner; there's some personal things he wants from Evalle and he's very willing to protect her.

Former Special Ops Isak Nyght has assembled a team of ex-Special Ops, the Nyght Raiders, who patrol the city hunting for non-humans—Alterants they shoot on sight. Evalle keeps hoping that Isak never finds out what she is—he's a good kisser.

Based in the Nether Realm, the Tribunal governs all non-humans and is the court of last resort, usually without any input from its vict...er, the accused. It consists of Pele (Polynesian goddess), Ares (Greek god of war), and Loki (Norse trickster god). Each non-human species answers to a particular god/goddess. The Belador answer to Macha with Brina as the warrior queen of the Belador based on Treoir Island. Sen is the absolute bane of Evalle's existence. He lives to destroy her and in his position as go-fer for the Tribunal, he's in a good spot to do it.

Tristan is another Belador-Alterant. Unfortunately for him, however, he's been caged in a section of South American jungle by Brina. He claims it's a wrongful jailing; Brina isn't saying anything. His original crime seems to be wanting freedom for himself. For his fellow Alterants. A perspective with which Evalle agrees. But conspiring with a Kujoo warlord to destroy the world (Blood Trinity) is just not the way to change anyone's minds.

The Medb are witches currently ruled by Queen Flaevynn who has imprisoned her husband, Cathbad the Druid, and using her daughter, Kirzia, to further her own plots to prolong her life. Contrary to the prophecy. Both parents will use Kirzia to get what they want although Flaevynn a sadistic perv whom Kirzia is very careful about allowing thoughts of the enemy she loves from surfacing where the queen can read them. Seems the Medb are the only ones to know about a species, the Rias, descended from a beastline traced back to Cú Chulainn. A species that very closely resembles the Alterant.

The Cover

The cover is smokin' from red to black with the holographic silver hilt of a beautiful sword. The title and authors' names are in the same silver and is the focus of the story.

This was one of those couldn't put down books. It hit all my story loving nerves, in all the right ways. Intense action, strong women, heroism, hot men with undefined motives, witches, magics, monsters, gods, goddesses, shifters and even a cuddly gargoyle. It all fits together in this unique world that seems similar enough to our reality that I could fall into the story. I found myself on high alert for every page, the dust never settles. I was brought to tears, and to laughter several times and the plot twisted. The ending had the dreaded cliffhanger... but it's okay there was an e-mail.- read the book you'll get it.
Much better than the first book in the series, the first book set up everything for this one.

Macha is confusing. I think all of her manipulation is to help stop the curse Kizara keeps referring to. I hope so because separating soul mates and being a general b to one of her own, half Belador or full should not be a qualifier. But Gods are fickle and temperamental.

First off . . . can I say how much I love Storm!!

What a great book. Evalle is once again caught up in situations beyond her control. So many twists and turns in this book. I did want to choke a lot of characters in this one. Brina . . . Tzader . . . Macha (especially her!!) . . . Quinn . . . Tristan . . . even Evalle at times.

. . . and the ending! Geesh, I cannot wait for the next book to come out!!

I couldn't stand it. The pacing feels weird to me, and I'm already not a huge fan of the characters. I didn't enjoy how the main girl just met this storm fella a few days ago, (cited TWICE) and was already in love with him (?) and getting all jealous over how he was  looking for this girl in south America for a few months and wanted main girl to help him. unbearable. I couldn't even start chapter 3.

The cover art is stunning though.
