It was my first time reading horror stories and I didn't read them all since there were one or two novels I had already read in french. I'm more into classics and thrillers, I was wondering if I'd like such queer and strange stories, especially since short novels are not what I usually read either, but I liked this book very much !
My favorite ones are The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat.

Very much the classic Poe style, in that delightfully snobbery manner, Tales of Mystery and Imagination is a great research tool for short stories writers. Succinct building of scene, character and plot is, as always, achieved. Together with polish I find it a relaxing read in an old-world sort of way.
I take a one star away for the occasional unnecessary racism (unnecessary being unnecessary to setting the period, not relevant to advancing the plot) and the latter stories are rather not spectacularly different, in my view, albeit equally well executed.
On the proviso a reader is capable of recognising racism to contextualise the views, I recommend it as a good research tool for those short stories writers wanting to experiment with style, or writers of any genre needing to research characterization and associated techniques.

This review is for the edition of three tales illustrated by Gary Kelley. Poe's tales, of course, are five stars.

This edition contains three of Poe’s strongest and most well-loved tales with some beautiful full-page illustrations: Amontillado, Black Cat, and Usher. The only two problems I have with the book are the font (which is quite difficult to read) and the lack of notes (or, at the very least, an English translation for the French epigraph at the beginning of Usher). Even so, this would make a fairly good introduction to Poe for young adult readers. For anyone else, this edition is probably not worth tracking down unless you’re a fan of Gary Kelley’s illustrations.

vocabulary too difficult and wasn’t getting attached to any characters. i think i’m just too dumb for this book for right now.

“I shall die, because of this fear, i’m not afraid of danger. What frightens me is fear itself. At the moment I am fighting against fear, but sooner or later I won’t be able to fight any more”

Someone recommended me this book years ago here on Goodreads, its late i know but better late than never!
I also needed to read for my Literature class “short story”, we are going to study “The Tell-Tale Heart which i think was my favorite stories in this book.
