I liked Poe in high school. Especially The Tell-Tale Heart and The Cask of Amontillado. Though some of the stories were not as I remembered. Still, they're good, classic spooky tales.
His descriptions really paint a picture and set the tone for his stories. I love the different perspectives/“twist” endings that some of them have. This is definitely a book where I’d just pick and choose my favourites to read again. Some, like “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and their sequels just dragged on felt like the main character was being too clever in a convoluted way that spoiled the story.
Favourites include:
- The Island of the Fay
- The Sphinx
- Eleonora
- The Fall of the House of Usher
- The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall
- The Pit and the Pendulum
- The Premature Burial
- The Spectacles
- The Tell-Tale Heart
These were the ones that I loved for their descriptions, content, and/or their endings. The other stories may have been fine, but they weren’t notable for me to remember liking them by the end, let alone remember what they were about.

Not exactly sure I know what I've just read but it was nice
Some of these stories seem so derivative, it's hard to remember that Poe started the cliches. But, knowing he did makes them super enjoyable.

I could see why some of these stories aren't selected very often, but editions like this are always useful to grasp the general feel of an author, and this one in particular taught me how Poe had a flair for the horrific and supernatural and also a natural aptitude for skepticism and logical philosophies.
I am still baffled at how Poe probably solved a crime with his deductive skills and implacable skepticism. I would love to read Poe if he lived in yhe post truth of today.
