Sadie Way Scott nearly drowned outside the B&B she grew up in 8 years ago.Since then she has been avoiding her family and her hometown. She has found success via an internet southern cooking show, but she still wonders what the purpose behind her survival is.

Leala Clare is Sadie's sister and she is plagued by the night of her sister's almost demise. Now her own life is teetering on the edge, and she can't figure out how she can be happy.

Brought together by their mother's minor heart attack days before Sugarberry Cove's famous water lantern festival, these sisters have to face each other, their pasts, and their futures together.

I have been raving about Heather Webber all summer, but she really writes books that feel like a soft landing and a warm hug. Her books tackle difficult issues, for instance in this one she touches on guilt, life trajectory and purpose, true love, and loyalty. But you just feel like you are rocking on a porch in a hammock on a perfect summer night being swept up in the story.

I love the sprinkles of magical realism and the power of wishes throughout this one and of course the smattering of romance I'm a fan of as well.

4 stars

This is a beautifully written story of a mother, Susannah, and her two adult daughters, Leala and Sadie, struggling to move on from the things left unsaid, and, possibly even more so, with the things that *should have* been left unsaid. It takes place in a fictional town in North Carolina, whose tourist industry is mostly focused on a lantern festival. Participants write their wishes on paper lanterns then launch them in the lake. Be careful what you wish for, as the saying goes....their wishes and the repercussions pull them apart, but eventually bring them back together.

The only thing I was not a fan of was the supernatural/magic element in this book. Apparently, that's a hallmark of Heather Webber's books, so it is more on me than on her. Her storytelling ability is excellent, bringing a wide range of characters to life.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Tor-Forge for the opportunity to read a digital ARC in return for an honest review.

Every once in a while, you pick up a book that just grabs you and sucks you in and won't let you go until the very end. The Lights of Sugarberry Cove was one of those for me. I stayed up way too late because I HAD to finish it. I loved it! It had my emotions on a roller coaster, I bawled like a baby a few times, but I also laughed out loud at times.

It's got a touch of magic, but mostly it's about relationships and family, which is the real magic of the story. There's hope, love, and above all, healing.

Honestly, this may be my favorite book of the year, and a rare 5 star read.
