Great story idea, but it didn’t quite live up to it’s full potential. Very interesting concepts and ideas though, so I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for something new and fresh. Some aspects of the storyline were in my opinion not fully developed, but the writing ist extremely beautiful and easy to comprehend. I didn’t understand all of the technical and physical information, but I feel like that wasn’t too essential to the plot. I have never read anything similar before, that’s for sure!

I was given this book as a present from my sweet family who knows I adore translations, and when I first read the description, I was intrigued.  It’s set-up primarily as a mystery with elements of science-fiction and multiple dimensions. The book begins by introducing the reader to many characters; each set-up with a backstory and a common thread of a flight they took together.  As the book progresses, the mystery is laid out for the reader and the flight that connected them is the center of the story.  Without giving too much away, an unexplainable situation occurs, and it becomes a global mystery with rippling consequences.

I really enjoyed the pace and the way the book was laid out in the first 2/3 of the book, and I had trouble with the meandering pace of the last 1/3.  Additionally, the way each country and each character were portrayed bordered on exaggerations, and it detracted from the story a bit.  I suspect the author was going for political and social satire and it just felt out of place in a mystery that was trying to build suspense.  I enjoyed seeing how each character handled the “event” and the variety of ways it played out in their lives - I think this was my favorite part of the book.  Overall, I liked the premise and enjoyed the thought-provoking aspects; it fell into the “selectively recommend” category for me.

This was the best and most interesting book I’ve read in a long while. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I will be thinking about this book for ages.

I think this could be a 5-star book for many readers. My issues with the book are personal, and more about my taste than the writing.

This was a really cool book and I can definitely see why it got so much attention when it was originally published in France. It starts out seeming like it'll be a sci fi book about parallel universes, but then pretty much ignores the question of how the second plane got to our world and instead focuses on the psychological and emotional impact. It's so interesting to see the variety of reactions to having a double and the reactions of the rest of the world, from everyday people to world leaders. Even though most of it is left unexplained, especially given the ending, the parts about what it means to be human or even just to exist end up becoming more interesting anyway.
