I probably read this for the first time 25 years ago, and I just finished it for the second time. Wow. What a book. When I read it the first time I was swept away by the romance, the secret passion. When I read it this week I was completely absorbed by Wharton's social critique. It's subtle, but comes out in this slow, smart reveal that finally just blew me away. Ok fine and the love story still got me. Poor Newland. Poor Ellen. Poor May.

I have it in my head that I occasionally need to read a classic, just 'cause. I chose this one on a whim. Originally I struggled with it, the first few chapters anyway. Finally, finally it linked up with my brain and I began to enjoy the book. Delve deeply in to it, and truly take the book in. I started out bored, no lie! In the end, I was sad to finish the book and although it didn't necessarily make my "favorites" list, The Age of Innocence reminded me why sometimes it is so very important to see a book through - even when you think that you are bored with it.

A classic drama of manners, intriguing enough to make me give the Gilded Age on HBO another try.
