After the Great War, friends Tommy and Tuppence find themselves short of money so they start a business “Young Adventurers Ltd” - their first job finds them sucked into a mysterious political conspiracy.

I would describe this as more of a swashbuckling adventure with a side of mystery and not the sort of murder mystery that I usually associate with Christie (and prefer). Tommy and Tuppence are Bright Young Things and the language is intense - it feels like Christie is using newfangled (at the time) slang at every possible opportunity, to the point of caricature. I do wonder if she was rather poking fun at the twenty-somethings of the day, though that seems a bit harsh since it she was only in her early thirties so hardly a crotchety old lady. This is also a great example of the changeable nature of language - anyone with a slightly immature mind (like me) will find amusement in the repeated use of the word ejaculate where we would now say exclaim. As for the political intrigue, it’s an interesting insight into how much fear the spectre of Communism and Socialism incited in the public imagination of the time, especially among the upper classes and in political circles, and the state of international relations at the time. A rollicking adventure mostly set in the upper echelons of society with a side of mystery, introducing us to the gung-ho Tommy and Tuppence.

Agatha Christie realmente nunca decepciona, as pistas são boas o suficiente para que você possa desconfiar do culpado mas poucas o suficiente para não adivinhar imediatamente.

Aw, this was a fun mystery.  A bit over-huge (the world is in the hands of two scrappy young adventurers!!!!) but I enjoyed the golly-geeness of it all.  I liked the two main characters immensely and began daydreaming about what a modern day Tommy and Tuppence would be like.

Tommy and Tuppence the most iconic duo 🥺🥺🥺🥺

I got it! I got it! I realised who the murderer was! I got it!

I enjoyed it, and although I thought I knew the criminal's identity, Christie kept me waffling between two suspects. Tommy and Tuppence surely provide the reader with a rollicking adventure but I wonder if I would enjoy a book from one of her other series more.

I guessed the bad guy, which isn't normal for me & an Agatha Christie. However, it was still a lot of fun to read. I wish she had written more than 5 of their mysteries.
