Okay to start off this review, I’ll just say that if I understood the economy better this would probably have been a five star read. There’s a lot of minutiae around shorting stocks and investments and stuff that just went way over my head.

I LOVED the active process the author takes us through of unpacking this man’s narrative and peeling apart the layers of lies to uncover the truth underneath. Mildred’s diary was by far my favorite section; her writing read very Plath in the Bell Jar, which will always be my favorite piece of literature.

Behind every successful man is a woman. Let’s remember that.

The first book section reminded me of that Jenny Slate/Gabe Liedman Bestie x Bestie “What’s Wrong with Books?” where JS Is like, “Just be an American! Everybody can do everything now! I don’t relate to that goddamn story! preposterous! Just read a frickin Dilbert and go to sleep!” The subsequent two sections explained the first, and the fourth was absolutely lovely, so I forgive it.

literary yet highly accessible. Was drawn in by the mystery. Prose was crazy good. Yet did not really love the characters

Beautiful character study. It's really three books in one. The first third of the book really absorbed me in a way I didn't anticipate, and the characters stay with you long after

Very interesting formatting - I can’t say I’ve ever read a book like this before. Despite disliking several key characters, I found their stories fascinating and really loved the way information and the “truth” was revealed to us. It was interesting to see how important image and public perception were to Andrew and the lengths he would go to to control it and create his own reality. The idea of memories and how they’re formed was also really interesting to me. I found Ida forming memories from photographs, for example, to be really relatable. I can definitely see why this was at the top of so many lists and I’m very glad I read it. It was not at all what I had been expecting.
