I enjoyed the story, but it ended abruptly and I feel it left a lot unanswered. Because of that, I only gave it 3 stars.

Eh, 2 1/2⭐️

A bit meandering & an abrupt ending without resolution but thought the exploration of how the relationships shifted throughout the book worthwhile.

I really enjoyed this book - the ending bumped it up for me. I found it thought-provoking as a partner and as a parent and as a child. The idea of "knowing someone" was something I appreciated, as well as the final chapter which made me think about my role as a parent.

This was a very unique take on gender and marriage. Why I found the premise to be a bit odd at first, I ended up really liking the story. The characters were certainly morally grey, especially the protagonist. This gave the story a sense of weight and realism despite the fanciful premise. Overall, this was an interesting read!

Thanks to the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Maybe the best book I've read this year.

A must read! I really think we need more body swapping (but serious) media. The way in which the author encapsulated the negative self thoughts and the rumination of Eli was very exact, and if you think you know what will happen, you do NOT. The ending absolutely surprised me, in a good way.

This book felt so human and real in it's exploration of intimacy, relationships (both familial and otherwise), and love. I didn't root for any of the characters, and I think thay might be the point. Eli is a husband that doesn't really care about how his actions effect others, especially his wife. He is constantly late and absent, and doesn't truly listen to what Elizabeth has to say.
Elizabeth is judgmental and holier than thou, constantly discussing how brilliant she is and how she's better than everyone else. I think I sort of hated her tbh. But on the otherhand, I also hated Eli for the way he would do things that were hurtful and not truly acknowledge the hurt.
There are so many themes explored in this book that makes it a good read. Do Eli and Elizabeth actually love each other? Does it truly matter if they love each other if they're willing to hurt each other? What's the role that parents and upbringing play in making you who you are?
Elizabeth believes she's better than everyone else because that's how her parents raised her. Her parents are pretty insufferable, but at the same time it seems they do care about her daughter. I found it very interesting how they judge "Eli" who is actually Elizabeth claiming that he's a terrible person who was raised by a terrible mother, and that Elizabeth deserves better. But in reality, it's THEIR daughter who has thrown everything away and left her spouse in a foreign country.
There's so many layers to this story that make it so interesting and relatable. I related to it more than I would like to admit. We are all imperfect people living in an imperfect world. I feel as if I'm both Elizabeth and Eli simultaneously and I don't quite know what to do with that information.
