After reading a long string of climate-related literature and news articles, this book was a very welcome respite. I laughed; I cried; and it’s possible that those reactions were mostly stress-induced because of said climate/news-related media, but I still loved many parts of this book. Primarily the characters; also a nod to the wonderful Phryne Fisher and an MMC of “beautifully average length” 😂 who feels protective instincts and sometimes realizes that he doesn’t need to act on them. Dreamy.
My only regret about this book is that the beginning is paced well and the end is TOO MUCH. Too many plot complications all at once, too many fingertips brushing all the time (seriously, in the second half of the book, the MCs must spend 92% of their waking hours brushing fingertips), too many repeated, wondering declarations of love. I really appreciated each character’s backstory and the way the characters work through their life experiences in their relationships. I would have enjoyed more practical conversations, exchanges of perspective and compromise, and 60% less fingertips. Not NONE, just less.
That being said, I’ll definitely look for more books by this author. 🙂

“Despite everything, as the Sugar Fair motto said, Vita est plena magices. Life is full of magic.”
I admit—I'm a sucker for Lucy Parker's writing. So, as soon as I found out she was releasing a book about a baking competition, I knew I had to read it. And I'm so glad I did—this was such an adorable romance! Sylvie and Dominic were great main characters; they were verrrrry much the sunshine+grump trope, but they were also each complex in their own ways. I could really see what they each saw in the other, and I appreciated how they were able to connect on a deeper level. I did find that the story got a bit slow at times because of all the different layers to the plot (especially with all the royal stuff), but I do like how it eventually all came back to the main plot of S&D getting together. Overall, I really enjoyed this, and I'm so pumped for Pet to get her own story in book 2! :))

I really liked the idea of this book and thought I would enjoy it but I had to DNF at 28%. I found myself becoming distracted and losing interest, I think there was too much happening.

So many plots going on that this was more drawn out than it needed to be. You could've cut the baking show out and nothing would've changed. Liked the romance but I feel like we barely got to spend anytime on that because we had to focus on some random plot that disappeared in a couple of chapters.
