What an ABSOLUTE delight this was!?!?! This was the type of book you read to prime you for feelings of rainbows and sunshine and happiness.
✅ cute banter
✅ enemies to friends to lovers
✅ great supporting characters
The Good:
-Plot: Honestly, really cute way to bring them together, and I was vested in figuring out the cake and background of the Prince.
-Sylvie: She was a rainbow incarnate. She was funny, kind, optimistic, strong. I live for her.
-Mabel: so angry…. Sooooo soooo angry, and I was here for every single second of it. I LOVE her.
-Dominic: He’s not my book boyfriend, but I support him. I like that we slowly watched the ice king melt into the literal rainbow unicorn princess.
-Side characters: Can we stop to appreciate the loveliness of these characters?!?! I mean, Mabel… BAMF. Princess Rose… BAMF. Pet who is just insecure yet loving… BAMF.
-Theme: I liked the look at grief and coping. I thought it was powerful to show the aspects of that and how supportive the characters were.
-No craziness: There were no crazy cheatings/pregnancies/other random shit that ruins good romcom books. It was just a great plot with wonderful characterization.
The Bad:
-Plot: I said it was good, and it was, but there was also a lot happening here. There was a romance, family trauma, a royal wedding, a mystery to solve, a cake to create, jealousy, AND a crazy side chick.
The Verdict:
If you want something sweet and happy, this is it. You can have your cake and eat it, too.

This book is absolutely adorable, and was a delightful read cover to cover. The characters were rich, interesting, and well-fleshed-out. I also appreciated how their flawed backstories informed the decisions they made in their relationship. (By the way, the fizzy, flirty, sexy romance of it all? Swoon. I think we all want a love like that for ourselves.)
Here's to emotionally mature protagonists and a leading man that's immaculately crafted for the female gaze. Can't wait to read this book again.
P.S. Lucy Parker, I love your literary voice.

A cute little romance. Enjoyable to listen too but I was never racing back to the book. It went on for a little bit too long for me.

Great British Baking Show with a side of grumpy vs. sunshine!
Sylvie officially met the stoic, cynical, Dominic when she unfortunately launched a unicorn made entirely of confections at him during a baking show competition.
Now fast forward, Sylvie has a successful bakery and has been asked back onto the show to judge alongside the grump who happens to also own a bakery right across the street!
When the pair find that their work lives start to entangle in their personal, sparks fly!
This book was a little bit slow to start but so, so worth the read! The characters were lovable, deep, and had me laughing out loud! I look forward to reading book two in this series!

The beginning waz super cute. But while I liked the character interactions, not a fan of how the plot was described.
Swoony, but a bit too goofy and over the top for me. I loved the characters and the romance, though!
With two enemy bakers forced to work in the same sphere - both on a game show and for a royal commission - this book is a lighthearted read about love and family you won’t want to put down.
Going into this book, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about a fictional royal family NOT being the center of the story, but the princess and her fiancé were included as supporting characters, which gave me a taste for that royal romance. While the main plot line focuses on the competition to make the royal wedding cake, there are many subplots going on between the diverse cast of characters. It wasn’t hard for me to disregard a few minor inconsistencies related to structure and point of view.
I hope Pet gets her own story next!

Yes! Bake-off inspired but entirely original! Such a delightful book! First of all, why doesn't Sugar Fair actually exist? I really want to go there, right now. Second, I don't always enjoy an enemies to lovers trope but this one ended up working really really well, I wasn't screaming "he's actually an asshole!" internally the whole time! I think there was a lot of lovely writing on grief and coping with family of origin stuff. The banter was funny and quippy, the food descriptions were all mouth watering, I came to care about both characters and found their journey towards each other to be believable and lovely. And the problems between them were often not about misunderstandings or lack of communication, but about all the underlying stuff that we bring with us when we get vulnerable enough for love. Definitely recommend!
