This book would probably charm me normally but something about it just didn’t grab me

Williams clearly did a ton of research on WWI, the 1918 pandemic, the sufferage movement and of course book binding. In the afterword, she tells us it was her book bindery research that gave birth to this book in the first place.

Unfortunately - at least for my reading experience - she did not succeed in her quest to build characters or even give shape to a "story" around her research.

After listening for about six of the fourteen hours I started alternating between skipping chapters and listening to them.  The dates and details changed but nothing else seemed to do so.

I kinda hate marking another book "Read" despite skipping chunks of it. But  did listen to the last chapters in their entirety and feel confident I have the big picture here (perhaps even more so than other books that inspired use of the Forward function.) I was reminded of watching soap operas after middle school; I would skip weeks at a time and still I knw all the ins and outs of the plotlines.

It's marvelous that so many who enjoyed The Lost Dictionary (as I did,) are enjoy in this follow up. My fellow outliers and myself will just have to look elsewhere for our reading joy.

I love how this author allows me to understand the everyday life of people from the past.

I thought this book was going to be about X. Then, after reading a bit I thought it would be about Y. That got completely chucked and I gave up finding “a plot” and just enjoy time with Peg and Maude.
