Laid up in bed after an illness I finally got around to finishing this book I started ages ago. Why did it take me so long? I'm not sure. I kept starting other books and never quite finding myself in the right mood.
Now, everybody and his dog told me how great this book is. Portuguese Booktubers I follow seem to have it in the 4-5 star zone, my wife likes it, my niece pinged me on instagram saying she liked it... Once when I went to see The Book of Mormon, I had it in my bag and the beefy security guard who was doing bag checks told me he was a huge fan too.
And they're right. Everything you've heard is right. The first line is justly famous. The last paragraph is a blinder too. Manderley really does feel like a character, and the other characters - even the minor ones - are all really well drawn. The pace is controlled nicely, especially at the end, where you feel like it could have gone down a number of predictable routes, but the suspense just keeps building. There's a slightly slow patch near the middle, just before it all kicks off, and that almost made me downgrade it to a 4-star, but that seems a bit mean so let's say 4.5.
