4.5 stars!! I loved this dark, moody gothic classic. I especially loved how [a:Daphne du Maurier|2001717|Daphne du Maurier|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1422444467p2/2001717.jpg] was able to make me feel such empathy towards the narrator, even when she was at her meekest and most pathetic, and especially through her emotional evolution. I also suspect that my feelings about the main characters may change when I reread it in the future; regardless, I’ll be mulling over these characters for a long time.
The atmosphere was expertly crafted as well — Manderley is a place I’ll visit again and again in my dreams. The exact book I was in the mood for!

You’re never too old (68) to read a masterpiece. My sister has been on at me for 50 odd years to read this book. Now I finally have.
Why’s it so good?
- Descriptive language and use of all senses esp smell. (Eg chapter 26 first couple of pages)
- Sense of place
- The author’s ability to capture a small, insignificant, passing moment in time (chapter 5) and small, powerful details (start of chapter 6)
- ‘Famous Five’ type page-turners - the discovery of hidden secrets such as the hidden cove.
- Brilliant characterisation esp how the author captures the nameless main characters anxieties and shyness such as her fear of what the servants think about her underwear (chapter12 paragraph 3). And the description of Favell: ‘… hot blue eyes usually associated with heavy drinking and loose living … in a few years he would run to fat, his neck bulging over his collar … his mouth was too soft, too pink …) (chapter 13)
Why didn’t I give it five stars?
- Didn’t make me sad
- Convoluted AgathaChristie whodunnit element in chapters 23-25.

i didn't like this book, even though i really wanted to. the story is very slow and at times it feels like the plot isn't going anywhere. it's also weird because like the first half of the book was stronger than the last half but it was slow and then suddenly the last 50 pages got very fast.
