Rebecca is one of those classics you wish you had read sooner. I didnt think Id be so taken by it because the first few pages were very descriptive and seemed to be getting nowhere. The author has done such a great job of writing dual characters, the unnamed main character and the ghost, Rebecca. The main character has traits of constantly zoning out and overthinking and creating fake scenarios up to a point that Rebecca itself becomes so real in her imagination.
Rebecca, though dead, is much more alive than the main character who stays nameless all throughout the book. When unmarried she's called nothing and when married she takes on the surname of her husband and is in the shadows mostly. The character who will love even if their loved one has murdered, who will bend and yield and finally wither away all for her husband who doesn't even address her by her name and the character who is dead but free of society and her husband's expectations to be docile.
As such I confess that I sided with the main character, with how similar she was to me and need to reread to see this from Rebecca's POV: the woman who gets called mad and villainous simply because she decided to do what she wanted. I agree she had many wiles and that is how witches came to be, perhaps.
And in case someone didn't get the story, the acknowledgment section does good by explaining it and the characters and inspiration behind them, which i found pleasantly surprising. Both characters draw on from the author's dual traits, the lonely, quiet unnamed main character and the rebellious Rebecca who does what she wants and is free.
