This is one of the harder to find Eberron books, which is odd since it was one of the earlier ones and presumably should have been in print longer. It is a collection of short stories, some of which are notable for providing additional background and origins for characters feautred in later novels. Keith Baker gives us his party from 'The City of Towers', Edward Bolme features Teron from 'Orb of Xoriat', James Wyatt provides another angle on Janik Martell from 'In the Claws of the Tiger', Paul Crilley's Col shows up in 'Night of Long Shadows', and Tim Waggoner shows how Diran Bastiaan and Ghaji met before 'Thieves of Blood'. None of the stories are essential for reading those later books, of course, but I did appreciate getting more out of my favorite characters in the franchise, the book is only missing a contribution from Don Bassingthwaite to be an all-star collection.

Being a collection, some stories are better than others. A few were a bit confusing in execution. The collection succeeds as a broad overview of the setting and an ideal place for a reader to start.

Honestly, I just bought it for the Tim Waggoner story, which was good. The Keith Baker one was interesting as well. Once I realized the rest were often poorly edited and quite trivial, I realized I had gotten all I could out of this story collection.

Tales of the Last War is a short story collection with various contributing authors, where the stories are all set in the Eberron universe. Eberron is a fantasy realm similar to that of Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance.

This is a really good collection from some extremely talented authors, such as James Wyatt, Keith Baker (creator of Eberron), and Tim Waggoner. I strongly believe that this small novel is a wonderful introduction to the realm as it covers a lot of the fantastical elements that make Eberron so special such as magic-infused constructs like warforged, exceptional Houses (families of nobility) with unique abilities and innate talents, as well as elemental-imbued old world tech.

I really enjoyed this book and I love going back to it every now and again. It was my introduction into Eberron, which is one of my favorite universes to date. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a bit of deliciously exciting fantasy and wit.
