at first, and less importantly, the writing style was a bit of a task to get used to. but in the end, i admired it.

now, more importantly, what i gathered from this little book and the actions of the protagonist — while self-proclaimed to be non-egotistical, he certainly holds his nose high and had the (quite usual) stupidity of men when it comes to thinking they know all about what a woman wants.

in sickness and health, he treated her with silence and a sort of indifference; possibly thinking it'd gain her respect or admiration, with her being young and meek, and he, matured and serious. obviously, this doesn't go well; and what made it worse throughout was that he claimed to enjoy their contrast, and continued on with his emotional torture.

near the end, his heart seems to turn after realising how weak she's been and showers her with spontaneous, surprising, exploding expressions of love. the suddenness of it all led to her demise. it seemed she was learning to be okay with her husband being a stranger; then the sudden confusion tormented her just enough.

maybe he did love her to the point of worship, but she was already far too broken to bear it.
