I honestly am not sure what I thought I'd feel when I started this book, but I do know that the emotions I felt during the book far exceeded my expectations. I love being a part of Jane's interactions with the world around her. Jane comes from a place called Skull's Row and she will do everything within her power to not return there. Little does Jane know that her secrets seem to not only be coming to the surface, but they seem to be impacting more than herself. We soon meet a mercenary named Soren, he's an elite man, top of the food chain type of guy. He can kill without remorse; he's a person who can instill fear easily. What happens when these two people of this dark world happen to fall in together, and start unraveling each other's secrets? They start to get a glimpse of the world and start showing their true depths of their hearts.
This book has made me feel all of the emotions! Left and right I didn't want to stop reading, I wanted the next piece of their hearts.
The spice in this book? I feel the spice was spicing. Definitely gonna be saying that was like 3.5
Spicey scenes - Chapter 16, Chapter 23, Chapter 34, Chapter 36 (non-descript and brief), Chapter 40 (brief). The scenes do generally span more than just one small section, but they did not overwhelm the story or take away from it. I feel for the situation the characters are in it helps develop, well themselves really.
I cannot wait to read the next book on this!!!!!!!!!!
Do you like the world where it's dark and brutal to survive, and yet people still have a heart and feelings that they don't allow to fully darken?
Where the characters have done dark deeds in order to keep those, they love alive?
Have a touch her and die vibe?
A world that has magic, but also it has fear dealt by those without it?
This is a world of chaos, brutality, mercenaries, pirates, and magic. We have those morally grey men we love in our books, and we have an equally strong and brutal FMC that is willing to do what she has to in order to save those that she loves.
Yes? Read this book!

I listened to this book and the narration was great. I enjoyed the story but did catch myself drifting from time to time. That could easily just be a me thing.
Non-Spoiler review:
We follow Jane who has healing powers and a deep rooted fear of Skull Row and the Zeniths that come from there.
Soran is a Zenith who is charged with the task to hunt down a mysterious woman with the Zenith tattoo who just so happens to be a little, feisty woman with beautiful orange-read hair. It's Jane.
I feel this was a good rendition of an enemies to lovers trope because Jane does actually try and kill Soran a few times before she catches on to some key character traits of Soran's.
The story follows them as Soran forces her to go back to Skulls Row to face The Council but there are some plotting and scheming between them and against each other. Lots of little twists and turns that leaves us with a nice little cliffy at the end.

I'm obsessed with the FMC - she's a feisty little firecracker! This audiobook was dark, delicious, and downright addictive. I'm loving the subtle sound effects - it's like a whole new level of storytelling. Both narrators totally nailed it and I'm super stoked to dive into the second book ASAP!

Thank you to The Nerd Fam and author Charlotte Mallory for the review copy!
I read this on both KU and as an ALC. The audio was so good! The narrators portrayed the characters really well, and I think the sound effects (kind of like graphic audio) really enhanced the experience!
This book was a bit darker than what I typically read, but wow I loved it! There’s fantasy elements, romance, and mystery. The FMC Jane is stabby and has a mysterious past, and the MMC Soren is a “touch her and die—literally” kind of man, but with a secret soft side. Their world is full of pirates and mercenaries, and seems vicious and cruel. I do wish there was a bit more world building and explaining of their magic, which is what kept this from being higher rated. I’m hoping we learn more in the next book!
I finished this book and IMMEDIATELY jumped into the next (The Secrets of Jane Reborn, releasing March 3rd). I’m so excited to see where Jane and Soren’s story goes!

The Secrets of Jane by Charlotte Mallory.
Overall I give it a 3/5 stars. The writing in the beginning of the book kind of bothered me but the more I read, I did start to enjoy it. I will be reading book 2.
Spoilers below:
“Oh darlin’, it’s these t1ts. You always get the pricks in the weeds with these girls, but they also land me my stallions.” She wickedly grins while looking at her nails.”
This is one bit of the writing that I’m like hmmmm…..
But the book is about Jane. She’s been hiding for most of her life because her father is a warlord and he kept his family hidden from Sculls Row. She also has a tattoo that gives her station with the warlords but women aren’t meant to get the tattoo just sons.
Jane gets into bar fights a lot and it put her on the radar of skulls rows and asked Soren who is a mercenary to collect her for questioning. His power is reading people’s emotions and intentions and it’s so strong he can almost read your thoughts. Jane is also a healer. Soren captures her and is going to take her back to sculls row for questioning, she does manage to escape because she knows the siren song and was able to lure him in with their chemistry and get him to put his guard down so she could sing and hed fall asleep. He ends up catching her later on because he could still see her intentions. He promises he’d save her and keep her alive because he’s intrigued by her but she doesn’t believe it. He also wants all of her secrets before he’ll help her. He ends up finding out about her dad and they also ended sleeping together. When they get to skulls row, he uses her as a “pet” so the warlords don’t expect anything and tries to hide who her parentage is even though they’ve seen the tattoo. Book ends w
