The fourth book in the Thursday Murder Club series, and as always I marvel at Osman’s dexterity with words, his ability to hold sadness, wit, comedy, suspense and pathos all in the same space. There is death - closer than before - and grief in this book that wasn’t in his previous books. His four protagonists continue to evolve as characters, reminding us that it doesn’t matter how old you are - there is always room to change, to grow. And not to benefit some future self, but because it is what’s worth doing or being right at that point itself.

We’ll have to wait awhile more for his next book in the series, so I will definitely miss my breakfasts and lazy afternoons with these septuagenarians for awhile.

“We think time travels forward, marches on in a straight line, and so we hurry alongside it to keep up. Hurry, hurry, mustn’t fall behind. But it doesn’t, you see. Time just swirls around us. Everything is always present. The things we’ve done, the people we’ve loved, the people we’ve hurt, they’re all still here.”

“Days of death are days when we weigh our relationship with love in our bare hands. Days when we remember what has gone, and fear what is to come. The joy love brings, and the price we pay. When we give thanks but also pray for mercy.”

witty and funny, the down time between the main plot beats were enjoyable, which helped me get over my problem with mysteries where they take too long. enjoyable twists and turns. can’t wait to read more from this series
