The author uses a space colonization setting to write about a political debate. The factions are the Gens who settle the planet and the Woken who are the scientists helping in the settling. Then the Guardians show up to ensure the colony succeeds. The handling of the political debate was done well and the conclusion was good.
I found the conflict between the Gens and Wokens a bit manufactured, it was there only because the author said it was there. The buildup of the conflicts was easily to see.
The science was good and well defined but I would have enjoyed more. Worth the read.

Although I found the story interesting, I won't be continuing the series. It just didn't engage or excite me so that I was anxious enough to hear more of the story.
