so terribly depressing. is everyone in their 50's this unhappy?
I generally judge a book by the emotions I feel towards its physical occupation of a space. For example, if I walk into a room and a book I like is sitting on the table, I feel drawn to it and enjoy picking it up, carrying it around, and replanting it somewhere near me like a friend I have saved a seat for.
Basically, every time I found a few minutes to squirrel away with "July, July", my heart was like:

This book was a burst of joy simply to hold, and finishing it came with a real sense of bittersweet satisfaction.
There were so many unexpected delights of this book -- the characters, the structure, the delightful references to Minnesota that I absolutely followed because I live there! Some of the surreal metaphysical stuff with Johnny Ever got a little tiresome for my tastes, the dialogue was a bit contrived, and the pairing off of unlikely couples at the reunion was overdone; but the rest of the stories were so engaging and real that I could not put this down. And the ending -- OY VEY! I love this author, I loved this book, and I wish I could read it for the first time all over again.

great portrayal of a bunch of extremely separate and unique characters brought together once again at the 30th college reunion. most of the novel takes place during the night/day after the reunion party...with occasional flashbacks to help build the character development.
this was a book about the past. a book about misery and melancholy.
this author knows how to tell a story...how to intertwine characters so well that you forget that you don't know them.
he's going on my list of authors to read more from.
