I had previously read one of Gray's books (Secrets of Sloane House) and, I'll be honest, it wasn't one of my favourite. In fact, it was probably one of the lowest ratings I've ever given a book.
So, needless to say, when I received this one very generously from NetGalley, I was a little dissapointed when I realized that this was the same author who had written that doomed book which I hadn't liked. However, I was pleasantly surprised by An Uncommon Protector! The romance that blossomed between Thomas and Laurel was lovely, and the mystery was decently vague. I appreciated the setting and the respect that the two main characters had for one another.
Well done, Gray! You are redeemed in my eyes.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book for my honest review.

Y’all, this series has something very special… man love. That’s right, I mean good old fashioned, band of brothers, solemn vow loyalty! Toss in a Texas damsel in distress, a dash of mystery, a splash of danger, and a healthy dose of romance and that, my friends, is a recipe for one delicious read!
Laurel Tracey is just another rancher’s daughter-next-door until readers consider her resilience, determination, and tenacious work ethic. Thomas Baker is no stranger to hardship and that just seems like a huge understatement. His fierce drive to protect Laurel extends beyond repaying a debt, Thomas is determined to defend her honor, her livelihood, and her home.
Readers become acquainted with the heroes of this series through flashbacks to their time in the POW camp and each reunion after the war’s end is both challenging and heartwarming. I can’t wait to see which officer will find love next!

I really like the author. I have read a couple others. This one felt too..”pat”. But it’s ok. She does flesh out the characters and that’s good...if I could just guess a little at the who, be left guessing a bit...keep me in suspense, please?
The second installment in the Lone Star Hero series. The first book, A Loyal Heart, followed the story of Robert Truax and his fallen soldier/friend's wife Miranda. This book follows another of Johnson Island's prisoner of war camp soldiers, Thomas Baker. Thomas, Robert, Major Ethan Kelly, Captain Devin Monroe and others are in a prisoner of war camp together during the end of the Civil War and form a strong bond, and a vow to help one another. This book opens with Thomas in jail, on a chain-gang, working at Laurel Tracey's ranch in Texas. Laurel buys Thomas's freedom as an indentured servant, to help work the ranch she inherited from her parents. Good book, I am looking forward to the next one! :)
Liked this second book in the Lone Star Hero series. Though somewhat predictable, I liked the characters and it was a nice, clean romance to listen to while doing household chores! 3 1/2 stars
A cute story story of perseverance amd fighting for what you care about.
That is all that can be really said about this book.
It took place over the course of 3 days in Texas after the Civil War between a southern belle trying to save her family's dying ranch and POW with no place to go.
The idea of the story was just that a good idea. Everything was too rushed and not explained. I ended the book with more questions than I did happy feelings. Yes, it does have a happy ending but it just didn't flow. The characters were made up good but their development together lacked a lot. Too many traits and memories were mentioned when they were alone but never spoken about when together. I mean how can you fall in love and want to marry someone if you know practically nothing about them let alone their past on top of, again, happening in only 72 hours?? Just not my style and lacked too much for me to truly enjoy.
The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 is that it did help me get back into reading after having my newborn daughter which is a plus with PP.

I loved this book! Both the hero and heroine were strong characters who drew you in to every aspect of their lives. I wanted to climb into the book and join their world, even in spite of the dangers and challenges they faced.
Laurel Tracey is in a predicament. A recently orphaned single woman, she has only her two step-siblings left in her family, and their only concern is selling off the farm, left to Laurel by her stepfather, so they can take the money and run. Not ready to take the easy route, she decides to hire someone to help keep her farm safe. Sergeant Thomas Baker was a soldier in the Confederate Army until they lost the War. Now he is a convict, jailed for debts incurred while playing a high-stakes poker game. For one year of service, Laurel pays for his release, hoping that he will be what she needs to keep her farm afloat. However, those who seek to force her hand in selling her farm become violent, and Thomas becomes more than just a hired hand - he becomes Laurel's protector.
Laurel and Thomas were wonderful characters! I felt connected to both of them. Laurel had a strong will but desperately needed someone to lean on, and Thomas was quite willing to be that person for her. He is my favorite type of hero - strong yet gentle, brave yet humble, and formidable yet willing to love. It's no wonder set both fell in love with each other. I also really liked that Laurel wasn't thought of this great beauty. It's nice to read about an "average" girl, who is not super thin with model looks.
This is my first book by this author, and I look forward to reading more! She has a great talent in storytelling and bringing history to life.

This story is wonderful. I could not put the book down. Gray is a fantastic writer. Every page was a page-turner! The premise of the novel is every girl's dream: a knight in not-so-shining armor coming to her defense, protecting her, respecting her, and falling for her! Thomas is an excellently written character. He is so realistically damaged, honorable, and strong. I loved him more and more as the story progressed. And, I absolutely love Laurel. She is a great heroine. She is vulnerable and pretty, but she is also smart, feisty, and strong. The action in this novel is non-stop. And, I love how strongly faith was portrayed, but the reader wasn'the beaten over the head with a fake, over-the-top message. The belief in God each character has is genuine and realistic. I love this story, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a well-written, sweet, action-packed, clean romance.
