This is such a quiet book, but there is a charged undercurrent of grief and hope in here. There is no plot or really action. Actually, the “action” happened outside the book, Sophia’s mother dying.

You’re an outsider on their island, and you watch as Sophia, the grandmother (and the father was there too) go through their summer. Just living and sort of exploring. However, they don’t talk about Sophia’s mother dying, but you can FEEL it as it casts a shadow over the book.

The writing is lovely and descriptive. The world that Tove built is simply asking to be recognized and acknowledged. There is no comfort here, and recognizing the book and this world for what it is will leave you shipwrecked.

I didn’t realise the author was also the creator of Moomin and that whimsy really moved me. A lovely book!

Just so beautiful and surprisingly nostalgic. This is going to be a regular favourite for me.
