#OUABC 2023 Reading Challenge: 40 Prompts (20. A Book you started but never finished)
#StoryGraph: fiction classics literary lighthearted reflective relaxing scandinavian translated-works

Sophia and Grandma live together on a Scandinavian Island for the summer. This book is translated from the Swedish, is character driven and I would classify it as contemplative literary fiction. The story of these two endearing characters is told via small vignettes about their life and relationship.
DESCRIPTION
An elderly artist and her six-year-old granddaughter while away a summer together on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland. Gradually, the two learn to adjust to each other's fears, whims and yearnings for independence, and a fierce yet understated love emerges - one that encompasses not only the summer inhabitants but the island itself, with its mossy rocks, windswept firs and unpredictable seas.
Full of brusque humour and wisdom, The Summer Book is a profoundly life-affirming story. Tove Jansson captured much of her own experience and spirit in the book, which was her favourite of the novels she wrote for adults. This new edition sees the return of a European literary gem - fresh, authentic and deeply humane.

This gorgeous little book has been on my list for so long I don't even remember how it got there.
I had such a hard time finding a copy that I had almost given up on it. Then I wandered into a bookstore in Manhattan that had a huge international section and there it was.
It was worth the effort. I loved it.

Very sweet— reminded me of Islesboro. I love a grandma daughter relationship books. Vignettes aren’t my medium but it worked fine for this.

This isn’t a book that goes anywhere, just a charming book about a girl, her grandmother and their discussions and adventures on a small, remote island
