It's not the philosophical masterpiece that the cover blurb seemed to suggest it is. But it is delightful and comforting.

It has all the wonderful whimsy and practicality that seems to be cornerstone of all the Scandinavian fiction I've read.

Tove Janssonin Kesäkirja on todella viehättävä katsaus saaristolaiselämään.

A spare and dark story about a young girl slowly coming to terms with the loss of her mother, mirrored in her crabby grandmother's coming to terms with the loss of her own lifetime now essentially behind her. No plot, just a series of vignettes, and yet a very clear sense of the passage of time, gently sorrowful if not mournful, as the draining of a once-endless reserve of carefree summer days addles the spirit. Spare and severe; maybe a good thing to read to a particularly moody but intelligent child.

Perfect last novel of the summer - a girl and her grandmother on an island in the Gulf of Finland and their summer of taking care of each other in 22 poignant vignettes.

Honestly loved this. Tove jansson is truly a light in my life. Need more representation of familial relationships.
