tove jansson has such a particular way of writing, it’s kind of brusque and understated but simultaneously giving great attention to small details, and humorous in unexpected ways. i’m not sure it’s for everyone, as there’s always these big emotional themes looming over the work but they really run throughout the stories in subtle ways, so it’s not as much rigorous exploration of a feeling as it is reflection if that makes sense. could leave you feeling a little unsatisfied, but i enjoyed it

it was short and it was beautiful.
i had never heard of tove jansson before until i joined laufey’s new book club and wow did this one hit me like a truck. the story of sophia and her grandmother goes way beyond what seems like a short story written for kids. no. it’s filled with endless wisdom that we experience and learn in life and with the witty characteristics of both the grandmother and sophia, it made the story so much more enjoyable and wholesome that your heart will both flutter and laugh and yet also hurt from the deeper meanings behind what seems to be a mundane life.
read this in one sitting and i’m enamoured to implore more of tove jansson’s works! i will now trust anything that laufey recommends because this truly was such a quietly serene and beautiful read of two characters discussing life, death, love, nature and just the mundane simplicity of it all. beautiful. absolutely beautiful. highly recommend this to everyone!
