The Summer Book by Tove Jansson feels like slipping into a sweet moment.
Told through gentle vignettes, it’s the tender, mischievous, and deeply real relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter…two souls meeting in the space between generations that makes this so moving.
Each small scene carries a big question about life, loss, and what it means to belong to both the earth and each other.
Nothing is hurried here; the wisdom quietly seeps in.
Thomas Teal’s translation is outstanding.
Every word feels placed with care & intention.
I finished it feeling reflective & touched and a little more in love with the art of noticing.

Perfect novella about grief, seaside life, and childlike wonder. I absolutely adored this, especially because it had the same kind of magic as the Roald Dahl books I grew up with (the grandmother / grandchild dynamic reminded me of "The Witches"). Is it something about Scandinavia?

a wonderful cozy book depicting sophie’s summer with her grandmother. it was a super cute book where the two don’t really have any big adventures but they learn to coexist and cohabitate.

i like it but it takes some getting used to. ive been reading stone butch blues for a while now which has one story that is stretched over the book while this one goes from one thing to the other. i feel like it fits with tove janssons writing style from what ive read of the moomin series. the stories in this book are insightful and sweet. so i appreciate the book as it is but im not too sure abt the writing style.
