One of the first horror books of this kind which means it was both dated and quite good in parts. It didn't feel very creepy though no doubt when it was first written it probably was to readers at the time. I've read a couple of Wilkie Collins now and find that I'm not overly keen on this author.
Enjoyed this cozy mystery book a lot, it was such a fun read and it felt very cozy curling up in bed with this book and a cup of tea. Will definitely reread Woman in white and give his other books a go after this!

It amazes me how readable Wilkie Collins is after all these years. The language never gets in the way of the story or the characters.
The story did slog a little in the middle due to the abundance of family members that play relatively minor roles, but the ending made up for that. It was creepy and not too obvious of a twist, especially considering how long ago it was written.
I didn't quite love this and it doesn't hit the same level of awesome as The Moonstone, but it's a short, easy read if you're in the mood for an old school mystery.

I didn't engage with this book at all. I found the characters were two dimensional and unsympathetic. For me the story was insubstantial. It got better towards the end but I would't call it a triumph. I haven't read any other Wilkie Collins, and I'm disappointed this was the novel Penguin decided to publish- i am reluctant to read more of his work.
This is what happens when you're seduced by a pretty new edition and an intriguing title - massive letdown. About 80% of the book is purely buildup and exposition, followed by a frankly disappointing conclusion. Despite the title and the premise it isn't creepy in the slightest. Not even the quality of writing lifts it for me, but Victorian tends to be my least favourite era for fiction so YMMV.

Ranked Book 11 (out of 15) of my holiday reads - August 2020
A short but sweet read - 3*
Hate comparing stories but I think the Woman in White is stronger. Both the Haunted Hotel and the Woman in White have the same formula to the stories. The formula is as follows… haunting backstory introduced at the beginning + a foreboding sense of danger + a side-plot of a love story.
A short read but I enjoyed it.
