The Haunted Hotel is a murder mystery although it does feature aspects of the supernatural alongside a gothic theme. The story dragged a bit in the middle but the ending more than made up for it. All in all a good mystery novel. I'm rather excited to try more of Collins' work.

The main tale in the book was a decent ghost story. It didn't feel intensely original - for ages I couldn't shake the feeling that I'd read it before - but it was enjoyable all the same. The mystery itself wasn't obvious, so it had the draw of a mystery to figure out. I also found some of the characters fairly appealing, and hoped for happy endings for them.
What stopped the book being great, for me, was the way the characters were handled. There was no character prominent enough in the story to feel like a central protagonist, but the view points were not spread out evenly enough to feel as though we were getting multiple viewpoints of equal value. The end result was a worst of both worlds scenario, where you didn't get the broader view that multiple perspectives offers, or the closeness provided by a single main character.
The shorter story at the back didn't capture my interest greatly, but I'm not really sure why.
