dark mysterious slow-paced

Meh. I am underwhelmed by Mr. Collins when he is not collaborating with Mr. Dickens or some of their other literary circle.

3-3.5. Somewhat predictable for Collins and conspicuous for its lack of opium as a plot device.

Very uneven in pacing. Drags in the middle, but the ending (reveal) was satisfying.

Those times when you tell yourself to read until 11pm only, but ended up reading at 1am.
Yup, it happened. Again.
The first one was when i read THE WOMAN IN WHITE, and the second, this book.
I was so scared.
I was in the climax--- most frightening part of the story by 1am.
ONE IN THE MORNING.

There was only a plywood partition between my room and my sister, it was so quiet that i heard a single sound of her breathing that i felt she was close, right beside me. A twig fell on the roof, i cursed silently.

God, it is always a pleasure reading Wilkie Collins.
I cannot imagine how i ended up reading THE HAUNTED HOTEL at 1am!

This is probably my favorite classic next to Pride & Prejudice and The King in Yellow.

This is not one of the author's best books. I was disappointed.
