I had expected more from this book. The plot is very interesting, intricate, complex and farfetched; good for a gothic novel. Style of writing is... not that great. Add to that, that I've the feeling the narrator is a sexist bastard (as well towards men as women). Do not want.

Well-written, as I'd expect from Wilkie Collins, but the set up and introduction of the characters took way more time than the "ghost story" that I had hoped this was. If you're looking for a romance with some supernatural thrills at the end, then I'd recommend it - but if you're looking for a ghost story, try somewhere else.

Quite slow paced as there's quite a bit of introduction and lots of characters to introduce surrounding the mystery of the haunted hotel, in saying this I very much enjoyed the plot twist... Whether or not its effectiveness is affected by how late in the book the twist is revealed I can't decide, there are always things that could be expanded on but going off how slow the book was in general I almost didn't want anything more to happen after the reveal 😂🥲
Overall, a good little classic mystery

Enjoyable and easy to read. Somehow the ending was too quick for my taste and the book list a star because of that. Having just read The Great God Pan by Machen and Collins’ own The Woman in White, there was little suspense has to who was going to be the villains.
I mean... The whole haunted part was pretty good. But the leading up to the actually haunting was 3/4 of the book. Then there was a few creepy things and then was absolutely no ending. "you wanna know what really happened? Well I'm not gonna tell ya soooo.... Bye"
Not one of my favorites from him, but I still enjoyed it. There’s still so much more I wish we learned about the Countess.
