The Haunted House is a 'thriller' or 'crime' story which reflects an era, but has lost much of its impact with the passing of time. Its emphasis on the supernatural and pseudo-psychological to move the plot forward makes it seem dated where novels like Sherlock Holmes remain engaging.
I did enjoy it as a crime story, but I is certainly not a stand-out novel for me.
