This was used to supplement our term in studying brooks, rivers and oceans. I was pleasantly surprised by how much the boys liked this book, but also how much we learned. It made me want to learn more about each of the rivers covered: The Nile, the Amazon, the Yangtze, the Volga and the Mississippi. It went into the geographic aspects of each river, the history of the peoples on the river and brought it up to somewhat modern terms. I was able to do minimal additional research to add bits that brought the history up to present day for us. I found this a rich resource for what some might call an ironically dry subject. Kurt Wiese is a favorite illustrator of mine so that made it that much more enjoyable.
